"Johny has gone for a soldier..."
This song was written during the American Revolution, so late 1700's.
This song really doesn't require lots of research. The song's about two lovers split up due to war. Johnny must go and his lover is heartbroken back at home. She is willing to do anything to be with him.
The story in this case is told in third person. The lyrics indicate that the original song was written in first person probably during the Revolutionary War since it is a folk song.
I actually liked this song. It sounds like a country song that is written today..even though it's not. The song may be slow but I still like it.
This song allows me to learn that the American Revolution was not just the great leaders such as Washington. There were the little fighters who had loves too. Which had to be given up.
