This song was written in 1854 by Stephen Foster, not, in fact, by Mary J Blige.
"Hard Times" describes the hardships that existed even before the Civil War as well as the people's want for easier times. Times were hard back then.
Since the song was written before the Civil War, its safe to assume that it was written as the hardship was happening. Although it was remade many times. Language is pretty straight-forward in the song. There isn't much figurative language.
I must admit, that i do not like this song at all. It's extremely slow and the singer appears to be "whiny". I just don't like the song.
The song gives an accurate impression that hard times existed before the civil war and lets us learn that.
Good, now i can turn off this boring song....
