Brave Wolfe was written very early on. However, the earliest lyrics I could find were from 1966 by Martin Cathy.
This song is actually quite sad. The song is about a general of the English army named Wolfe. In 1759, his company were fighting a battle near the border of Canada against the French. Sadly, however, Wolfe was shot just as the English were winning. Wolfe died and the battle was won.
Although the song that came with the CD had no lyrics, you can sense the tone. The song was written after the events and retold the story. The music itself goes from very slow in the beginning and very rapidly picks up place almost to a victorious tone. It goes from mourning to victory. The writers were probably not in the battle itself.
When i first listened, I didn't really like this song. However, as I was forced to listen to it more and more, it grew on me. Now that I understand what the song is actually about, I realize that it's not so bad.
This song allows me to learn about a very early battle in the American history. As well as realize that all victories, however great they may be, came with a price.
