I love Indian Drum Songs. They really are like today's hip hop! You hear it and all of a sudden you just want to strip down to a loincloth, put on feathers, and start jumpin around a campfire! I guess that's sort of like hip hop, right? Right? *Echoes, Cricket chirps* Anyway, back to the whole working part!
The Indians who were the drummers used this song to possibly encourage morale and instill some happiness. Millions of other Native Americans were being wiped out, so I'm sure there was a little bit of angst in the tribe. This song helped that and provided morale.
This highlights the earliest possible point of American history. Before Europeans, before colonies, before taxes, into the (then) unknown world that is the Americas. It highlights our relations, which continue even today, with Native American tribes, and the whole aspect of Amerindians in the Americas. The Indians are a very important part of early American history.
The American story can only be American because of the skills that we learned from the Amerindians. Its a subtle voice, but they do represent some portion of America. They experienced hardship and famine as we did, so they do represent some Americana.
..especially since they liked to dance like we do now!
